SAT

Overview

The Scholastic Assessment Test, commonly known as the SAT, is one of the most applied standardized tests that are used for college admission in the United States. Designed by the College Board, the SAT aims at measuring students’ preparedness for college through assessing their critical reading, writing, and mathematics skills. First introduced in 1926, the SAT has been used by thousands of colleges and universities across the United States in admitting students, selecting scholarship candidates, and recommending course placements. The SAT is designed to measure the problem-solving and critical thinking skills of individuals. It helps the institutions of higher education to evaluate applicants’ academic readiness to pursue higher education in America.

The new SAT includes multiple-choice questions and optional essay questions. There is a primary test section made up of three elements: Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. The essay is optional, and not every college requires it. The SAT test is specifically designed to assess a student’s critical thinking skills, application of knowledge in context, and performance in reading and math problem-solving. It is a timed test, and its full length is approximately 3 hours long without the essay.

It usually targets high school students in their junior or senior year, although it is also available to international students heading to U.S. colleges. It is offered multiple times a year, and a student can take it as many times as desired for an improved score. The SAT is equally important during college admission, the scores being one of the variables used by various schools in determining applicants for scholarship grants or financial aid.
